Baldur's Gate 3 is based on the 5th edition of the Dungeons & Dragons tabletop role-playing game. The game is based on the 5th-edition Dungeons & Dragons rule set, though it includes tweaks and modifications that Larian found necessary in adapting it to a video game.

"Baldur’s Gate 3 has more cinematic dialogue than three times all three Lord of the Rings novels combined," Larian says. "It has 174 hours of cinematics, making it more than twice the length of every season of Game of Thrones combined."

Of course, you almost certainly won't see all of that in a single playthrough. Big chunks of that mass of dialogue and cinematics you'll only see after making specific choices in your playthrough. You'll need to play through again to see everything—or do a lot of save scumming.

During their investigations in the citadel's library, the Ward discovers a prophecy written by the ancient seer Alaundo, foretelling how the offspring created during the Time of Troubles by the dead god Bhaal, the Lord of Murder, will sow chaos until only one remains to become the new Lord of Murder. The Ward then finds a letter from Gorion revealing that the Ward is among the offspring of Bhaal, known as Bhaalspawn.

Players can play either in single-player mode, or in multiplayer mode. The latter allows up to six players to work together on-line with their own created characters.

Originally an elf known as "Joneleth", he was exiled from his home city of Suldanessellar by its ruler Queen Ellesime as a result of his hubris to attain godhood.

The first game in the series was Baldur's Gate and introduces the player character as a powerless orphan raised in the monastery of Candlekeep, south of Baldur's Gate and north of the kingdom of Amn. The main character searches for the killer of their foster father Gorion, and becomes involved with the region's iron crisis which causes metal to crumble, while battling to stay alive.

Just make sure to read the fine print so you don’t, for example, drink the invisibility potion o aprendiz that’s supposed to last 10 turns and immediately do an attack, which of course cancels the potion and makes you visible again. (Not that I’ve done this.)

Jaheira is a half-elf warrior druid and member of the Harpers, a semi-secret organization dedicated to promoting good and maintaining a balance between civilization and nature. Gorion leaves instructions for the player character to meet her and her husband Khalid after he is killed, although it is optional to recruit the couple into the party.

Companions are also affected by reputation, with evil companions leaving the party, even attacking it, if it is high, and good and neutral companions leaving when it is low. Some side quests also require a minimum reputation to begin. Certain NPCs may also react negatively or positively depending on their alignment and the player's reputation.

Viconia DeVir is a drow outcast and Cleric of Shar, the goddess of darkness, night, and loss. She is a recruitable companion throughout the original Baldur's Gate series, and a potential love interest for a male player character in Shadows of Amn, embodying the femme fatale archetype;[36] if her relationship with the player character continues into Throne of Bhaal, a possible ending in the game's epilogue would reveal that Viconia is murdered by agents of the drow goddess Lolth.[35]
